ARCHITECTURE - INTERIOR DESIGN

Tropical Homes works with some of the most renowned architects and interior designers practicing in Bali today. If you are looking to build your own home in Bali or for interior deisgn solutions, you may wish to consider one of the following firms.

Grounds Kent

Architecture 01

Architects Jack Kent and Martin Grounds first travelled to Bali in 1972, and have been working here ever since. Although now based in Freemantle and with big-budget prestige projects all over the world under their belt, Bali remains a favourite spot for Jack and Martin, and they have a thriving practice here. Says Martin: 'We were so lucky to arrive in Bali at a time that was defining the direction of villa style architecture for the next 30 years'. Over the years, Grounds Kent have designed many stunning villa developments and hotel projects in Bali, among them the Four Seasons Jimbaran, arguably the most famous hotel in Bali, and are the architects of Tropical Homes' project Sentosa in Seminyak.

Popo Danes

Architecture 02

Popo Danes is as multidimensional and international as his architectural design work. But his roots remain firmly planted in his native Balinese culture and community.

As a Balinese architect, his professional commitment to a development project is only about 40 per cent of what the job actually entails. The balance is blending the project and its owners into the surroundings, the community, the spiritual aspects of the space it occupies and even down to details of security and service.

Design becomes a compromise, to involve local builders, environmental aspects and land regulations. Incorporating all these aspects maintains harmony within the community so good local people surround a project and it brings meaning and value to the Balinese.

“Clients always start by asking me to recreate Balinese style designs in their country. But, in the end I talk them out of it,” he smiles. “Local architecture is a result of a long living experience. Architecture must be strongly attached to the local humanity,” he feels. A client wanted to replicate an Amandari-style design in Costa Rica. “If we did that, there would be no one to do the daily offerings. The place wouldn’t have Balinese charm,” he concludes.

For the future, Popo would like to see Bali as Indonesia’s capital for hospitality design. “The situation is unique for a Bali-based architect to see how local design has moved from cultural to hospitality to lifestyle architecture.” Bali also has the opportunity to experience the best foreign architects who have developed hospitality and villa designs in Bali. ”This helps us develop our local architectural technology, style and ideas. There will be a time when Balinese can and must do this for themselves.” Popo has worked closely with Tropical Homes on a number of Bali villa projects including Karang Jimbaran, Karang Kembar and Villa Baladewa.

Komang is a young, acclaimed Balinese architect with a well-defined design vision and Anang Karna has extensive experience in the praticalities of building and construction. Both have the goal to make Bali as famous for its architects and architecture as it is for tourism.
